I spent some time working out different ways of doing photo transfers. All of them take practise, for sure. This method was using matt gel medium on magazine pictures that have a glossy finish: easily found in National Geographic magazines. Layers of gel medium are slowly built up,allowing to dry after each application (which makes it super slow). After about 7 layers, the thing is turned over and you slowly rub the paper backing off with your fingers that you've dipped in water.
The end result is a transparent acrylic "skin" of the image. I put graph paper underneath so you can see the transparency of it.

I love the archaic look of these. The transparency and the torn edges really add to the effect.
